Expensive, but dead simple to use, which was very appealing to me.
Threshold knob controls the minimum input signal level at which the filter
opens, attack controls the speed of the filter sweep, mode switch selects
the direction of the filter sweep (up for low frequencies to high; down for
high frequencies to low; hi-Q for unaffected low frequencies but an upward
sweep on higher frequencies). Built like a brick outhouse. All metal,
except for the rubber knobs. Smaller and sexier than the competish.
Regardless of settings, this box delivers instant liquid '70s funkiness
along the lines of Sly Stone, Bootsy, Larry Graham et al. The up and hi-Q
settings are dead quiet; but the down setting generates audible noise.
This probably has to do with the fact that I'm using a passive bass. (If
you do own a passive bass, you may have to crank the threshold knob and the
volume on your instrument to get the filter to open. Consider adding a
preamp to your signal chain; your effects will thank you.) Other than
that, I have no complaints. If you'd rather play bass than twiddle knobs
all day, buy this one. To borrow a phrase, it's everything you need, and
nothing you don't.
