I own 2 Acoustic 301 cabs. Here's why. The first time I played an Acoustic 301 cab was because I blew a speaker out in my SVT 8X10" cab. As soon as I turned the amp back on with this cab hooked up my sound man shouted at me to turn the volume down when actually I haven't touched the volume at all! My first big lesson in audio engineering. Acoustic Control Corporation is long gone. Too bad. Although, I've heard a rumor that someone is looking into attempting a come back. Anyway, the Acoustic 301 cab is a great cab. It's not too heavy but there is some size to it. Which is negotiable because what really counts is the sound! And this cab has it! The design is ingenius by the time era standards. 70's. There is 1-18" Cerwin-Vega speaker. Cab design was great because they used 2 types of designs in one. First, the 18" speaker is mounted in the center of the cab facing the rear. The sound eminating from the front of the speaker was reflected around the top and bottom of the cab so it came out the front. Hello, folded horn. The second, was the back of the speaker was in a sealed enclosure which also enhanced bass frequencies. Hello, Infinite baffle. So now you have 2 low frequency enhancements working together. You can get highs as well, just adjust the pre-amp or EQ. (I would like to experiment with using the 301 cab as the low end of a bass player's bi-amped system with 2X10" speakers on top) The highs right off the speaker sound great when your close to the cab. Although you won't hear the real bass until you move about 20-25 feet away to get the true effect of the cab's character. The one down side is that in order to re-produce frequencies that low you need a certain length of distance to fully develop the desired frequencies. The atmosphere on this planet dictates that standard. You can't fool with Mother Nature. Don't think you won't be able to reach a deep tone up close because you can, but at about 20-25 feet this cab is just getting into character for todays performance. For a large venue, no one will say they didn't hear you. For a medium to small venue, everyone will tell you that you are too loud! Enjoy! I do!
