Well, I've finally found the ideal practice amp (for me, anyway!)
This little fellow is a hell of a lot better than any of the other
pieces of junk that are out there. It's quite sturdy; the back is
closed, and a metal grille protects the speaker. The knobs seem on the
tough side too. Also, it's not overly heavy; portability is a must for
this type of amp.
The sound? Well, the Boxer 30 is deceptively loud for its size,
though I haven't yet tried it with a passive bass. The mid-shift
switch is a nice surprise: it boosts the mids a hefty bit. The bass
boost on the EQ was a disappointment, though; it didn't seem to boost
or cut much at all. Overall, the sound of a small combo with one 10 is
going to be a bit on the thin side, but much less so with this amp.
Anything else? Well, though the amp isn't too heavy, the rubber
handle (or whatever the damned thing is made of) can be agonizing on
the hands after too long... Also, the jack for the power cord on mine
is starting to come loose after only a few weeks. Oh yeah, and where's
the external speaker jack? I find it very annoying that there is a
headphone jack, which I will never use, while a speaker jack would
come in very handy.
Regardless of the above, the Boxer 30 is one of the most
impressive practice amps I have ever heard. At this price, there are
bound to be some imperfections; still, it's far better than any other
combo in this range. Forget Fender and buy British!
