This has been a handy little effects box for me. I recommend it to anyone
who wants a full compliment of effects for a minimum price. As I
understand it this unit is now discontinued, but it can probably be
purchased for a good price used.
The Positives:
The unit has lots of handy effects like compression, flanger, distortion,
chorus, wah, auto-wah, amp simulation, volume swell, etc., along with a
5-band equalizer. It also has a built-in tuner that works well and can be
muted. The output is stereo if used with a 1/4 inch TRS cable, so you can
plug headphones into it for personal practice.
Personally, I don't use the effects very much anymore except for the
occasional compression and light distortion. I do find the tuner very
handy, especially if I need to re-tune between songs when playing live. I
just mute the pedal, make my tuning changes, and that's it. I also use
this pedal a lot for personal practice. I take it to work with my bass
and headphones and I play on my lunch break. BTW, the Digitech BP-200,
which is a competitor to this pedal, does not have a stereo output and
can't really be used with headphones. It also can't use batteries like
the AX1B.
The Negatives:
The unit does not seem like it would be super-tough as it is made out of
plastic, although I have yet to damage mine in any way. The distortion is
kind of weak and I find myself wishing for a separate distortion unit.
Also, because there are only two footswitches it can be kind of a pain to
cycle through effects. Then again, on bass you rarely need that many
different effects in a song anyway. I do find editting them to be kind of
a chore though. I wish the unit used dials instead of buttons. Oh well,
what do you expect for so little money?
All in all it's a useful unit: great for practicing and useful for gigs.
I like knowing that I can get such a wide variety of effects when I want
them without having to go out and buy another effects unit.
