About twenty years ago in an interview, Duck Dunn was asked; How often do you change strings? He replied; NEVER. And this is the merit of a good set of flats, and one reason that I gave the TI jazz flats a try on one of my G&L JB-2's. After about three weeks, a lot of the initial brightness and twang wore off, and they settled down to a nice warm, thick & creamy tone, while still retaining enough brightness to sound growly when I want them to. At first I was skeptical about the light gauge, wondering if strings this light could manufacture a deep tone. They do! And the low tension and slick feel make the bass easier to play than with rounds. Most other flats that I've tried over the years have had the opposite effect. The TI's seem pricey at $34, but considering how long they will last and how great they sound, they're cheap. Very balanced output and tone from string to string. I also run a set of Rotosound 77L flats on an SB-2, which sound good too, but I definitely prefer the TI's. TI has been making these same flats for decades, and you have to wonder how many great 60's and 70's pop tunes were recorded with these exact strings. I highly recommend these to any bass player for a vintage sound.
