I bought my Mark VIII about 6 years ago, and it still works just like new.
It has never broken down or given me any problems and it has been dropped
off the tailgate of a truck. I am playing through a 2x10 and 1x15 cabs @ 4
ohms at least twice a week at show levels. Unfortunately it still sounds
just like it did when it was new... like a peavey. The thing can go plenty
loud but it starts to lose definition in the low end, I have remedied this
by running a BBE sonic maximizer before the amp and this seems to help
bring out some extra punch and clarity. I can't really complain that I
didn't get my moneys worth out of it but it's still got that
"Peavey sound" and I wish I had the money for something new. I think
that maybe adding a tube pre-amp might further improve the tone. As far as
the EQ goes I think that at this point I'd rather have a 4 band
parametric (like an SWR) that the 9-band graph. I tend to use the shelving
controls and the boost switches more than the EQ. I think that as far as
old solid state bass heads go Peavey did a lot of things right with this
one, but of course new technology is generally better. As long as you can
match the Peavey reliability.
