I was a little skeptical never having used an all-tube amplifier before,
but after hearing so much about the difference that tubes make (and about
Aguilar gear) I decided to take the plunge.
The controls on 359 are simple and easy to use. I like the simple 3-band
eq (although, the mid control is centered at 400Hz-?). The XLR-out (on the
FRONT of the amp) sounds amazing, and the effects loop is set up better
than any amp I've used. It's also built to last. The steel frame is
solid, but, along with those tubes, makes this thing HEAVY.
The first time I plugged into this head, I was blown away by the
TREMENDOUS bottom end this thing puts out. I've owned amps by SWR, Eden,
and Gallien-Kruger that rated up to 800 watts and nothing comes close to
putting out the kind of low end that this amp has set flat. It has a fat,
warm, buttery bottom end that just blossoms in a band setting, sometimes
even too much (is that possible?).
This a great-sounding amp! I've played it with 2x10 and 1x12 cabinets,
but it really shines with a 4x10. It puts out great fundamentals, and has
an unmistakable tone. It can sometimes lack definition (probably because
of where the mid-control is voiced), but this thing has more booty than
any amp I've played through.
