I have a couple of Warwick Thumbs, one bolt-on, and the other neck-thru. The NT is kind of heavy at 12 lbs. 4 oz., so I was looking for something lighter and better balanced. I walked into the local GC one day, and there was a Modulus Q6 hanging on the wall. I got it down and looked at it, noticed that while it was apparently unsold, the fingerboard was filthy and there were a couple of dings in the finish. I played it and I thought it sounded nice, so I started haggling with the GC guy. I beat him down to $2800 plus tax, which seemed reasonable, so off I went with my new Modulus. The OHSC was pristine, and all the case candy was there. The strings on it were dead, so I got a set of Ken Smith Rock Masters and put them on. This really woke it up. Fiddled with the bass for about a week looking for "my" sound. Action was a little high, and I tweaked the truss rod and bridge and got a very low, buzz-free action. Adjusted the pickups. Cleaned the fingerboard, and it really had a nice glow. I played it a couple of times in a band setting and found that this was not the bass for me. I felt really bad about it, since I'm normally decisive about such things, but I have been spoiled by my Thumbs, and the Modulus just doesn't do that. Close, actually, but not there. I expected the Modulus to be very lively with the graphite neck, tamed by the Chechen fingerboard. It just wasn't as lively as my Warwicks, and obviously doesn't sound like a Warwick. Buying it was a mistake, and I took it back to GC who refunded my money without any drama. As I said, I felt bad, but for this money, a bass has to thrill me. The Q6 is a beautiful, high-quality bass. I was impressed with some of the little details, such as the special little rout for the batteries and the careful shielding. One thing I specifically didn't like was that the midrange frequency wasn't switchable, and I didn't like the frequency they chose. The truss rod adjusted smoothly, and everything worked as it should. I liked the combination of woods as well, and couldn't find any flaws in the construction. All in all, a fantastic bass, and lightweight at 9 lbs. 11 oz., but finally not my dream instrument. I'm gonna have to figure out how to handle a 12+ lb. Warwick, I guess.
