Years ago in whichever brand of string I used, I always used a heavier gauge thinking "Heavier string-heavier tone". I ended up settling on Rotosound swing bass 66's because they had a decent tone plus seemed to last a bit longer then others. Several years later we (our original Heavy/progressive rock band) found ourselves with an opportunity to play a large but last minute show,I scrambled to our local music store to replace my 2 1/2 month old strings only to find they didn't have any heavy gauge in stock-all they had from Rotosound were medium lights (RS 66LB) so in a pinch I bought them, threw them on and showed up at the show 3 hours later. The sound that came out of my bass that night stunned me-it was so much more punchy then normal with a sustaining growl that all the eq tweaking in the world was never able to give me, the attack was much quicker and the tension was so much less that playing was joyously easier. During the first song the guitarist looked over at me and clearly mouthed the words "wow", the rest of the band also noticed and mentioned the obvious tone difference. Ever since then I've only used the Rotosound RS 66LB medium lights, the difference between these and the heavier Rotosound gauges is akin to comparing one brand to another...on a side note the medium lights don't eat my frets alive like the heavies did.
