I purchased the Walkabout in hopes of obtaining an amp that would be capable of providing me with a nice warm tube sound. I wasn’t disappointed! I was very impressed with the volume levels that the Walkabout is able to produce. Playing the amp through a SWR Goliath III (8 ohms) it produces a huge warm tone that fits nicely with the rock style tunes that we play at the youth church. The amp can sound really clean or I can really add some nice grit by adjusting the gain control accordingly. The EQ is simple but highly effective. The semi-parametric controls are a bit sensitive so a little goes a long way. I basically run everything flat with a small boost around 1.7 - 2K. I owned a Mesa M-Pulse 600 for 8-9 months and the Walkabout does indeed sound very similar to the M-Pulse 600 (as advertised). I never pushed the M-Pulse 600 anywhere near it’s potential and thus far I’ve been unable to push the Walkabout beyond it’s potential. For the volume levels that I play, the 300 watts RMS of the Walkman is more than adequate. The amp has most of the features that I want although I do wish that it had a Speakon connector and mute switch. I really like the decision to locate the DI level on the front panel. Much easier than having to reach around to the rear of the amp to make an adjustment. Bottom line: If you want an amp that can get the warm tube sound, has adequate EQ'ing capability and allows you to feel every note played, this amp’s for you! Rock and Roll heaven!
