For the money, this is an excellent bass. As a comparison, when I bought it new in '92, the price was less than 1/3rd that of a Fender American Std P-Bass. It is significantly better than any Mexican or Korean Squier that I've tried. The tone (great '60s style bottom end) and playability are great, and the only real problem is a 'wolf tone' at the 2nd fret of the D string. It's not bad enough for a non-bassist to notice, and can be EQ-ed out. The frets are a bit soft, and a couple of years of stainless strings has just about destroyed them. A hip-shot drop tuner (customised from parts because non of the standard models would fit) has greatly extended the usefulness of the instrument. This was my first bass, and 'though I now use a rather nice '69 Jazz Bass as my main instrument, I still play it regularly. A fret job is on the horizon, after which I expect to get a lot more great service from this bass. I don't know whether this instrument is representative of Japanese Squiers, but if so then I strongly recommend them as a great first instrument which will continue to give great service as your skill increases. I have played many far more expensive basses which are no better, and some which are significantly worse.
