I use this amp with an Alembic F1x preamp, Pedulla and Yamaha 4 string
basses, an RNC compressor, and Carvin 2x10 and 1x15 speakers. I play rock,
jazz, blues, and funk with a loud drummer, keys, sax, and one or two loud
guitars. I usually play with one cabinet and use only one channel of the
amp.
In a word, the PLX sound is transparent. I sometimes play CD's with it and
get a clear hi-fi sound. The amp's best feature, though, is its headroom.
Forget about clipping; my speakers start distorting at -8db (they're rated
at 500 watts). I use a compressor to tame the peaks since the amp's limiter
has such a high threshold.
In a situation in which the players are competing for volume, this amp lets
you be the "master of the universe." However, in the wrong hands, this amp
will trigger World (Volume) War III. If you're in a volume war, don't
forget to EQ out frequencies that collide with other instruments. I mention
this only in the interest of preserving world peace.
My previous amps were a QSC USA 900 and a Stewart World 600. The Stewart
was brighter than the PLX. The USA sounds a lot like the PLX.
The low pass filters are very useful, as is the limiter, in protecting
speakers. And the fan is pretty quiet. Also, the unit runs very cool.
This amp is not sold with earplugs.
