Well, After taking the ORIGINAL Fender flatwound strings off my '75
Precision I tried a set of Fender flatwound strings - they were HORRIBLE -
my wife said my bass sounded like a guitar. A couple of people told me
the Thomastiks were the closest thing to the old-time flat-wound sound, so
I shelled out the big bucks. These strings are good, but weird. First,
they are NOT a replacement for 27 year old flatwound strings, nothing
thumps like my originals. But they don't have the horrible ringiness of
the Fenders. With my tone control and graphic equalizer on my amp I can
get a pretty satisfactory sound. They are LOW TENSION, they are medium
but feel like light gauge. I can do vibrato or bend the E string at the
first fret with my pinky finger!!! They have some kind of sticky residue
on them out of the package which was really annoying, but a couple of
weeks playing and some wipe-downs with rubbing alcohol and it is gone. I
like these strings, they were worth the price, but I'm keeping my
original Fenders in my safety deposit box.
