First of all, I am a previous owner (and true believer) in Aguilar's products. I used to own a db 728 tube power amp with the db 680 (which I purchased used) so, making the switch to the 750 hybrid head was a no-brainer for me.
Believe me, I've played thru every rig under the sun, and Aguilar stuff just blows it all away in terms of sound and construction. It's the holy grail of bass tone!
For you people in the NYC/Philly area, I should say that I purchased this item at Guitar Villa in Bethlehem, PA. It's a store I can recommend highly. John, the owner, is a true bass historian, and bass player. He takes care of the customer and he'll make sure you leave happy. If you appreciate customer service the old-fashioned way, it's a joint worth checking out.
So what's this amp like? In a word: LOUD! Loudest amp I have personally ever owned. Still warm and complex like all Aguilar stuff, because of the tube preamp, but the MOSFET power section focuses that sound very nicely. Since I play fingerstyle, the amp is extremely well-voiced for that, in my opinion.
Super-simple EQ, bass/mid/treble plus a deep switch that kicks in 3db of boost at 30Hz, and a bright switch. That's it! Like that SUV commercial, "everything you need, nothing you don't." You literally cannot get a bad sound out of it, even with nearly-stupid EQ settings. And with all the knobs set flat, it still sounds amazing (the true test of any bass amp, in my opinion).
Construction is bullet-proof, and the knobs have a weighted, buttery feel to them. The bright and deep switches are tastefully small, but very solid. Visually, it is a shining example of understated, elegant industrial design.
Are there any downsides to this monster? Only a couple, and they're no big deal, given the sound you get:
Like the other reviewer, I agree that the power switch on the back seems odd. Also, the main power switch is made of plastic, and doesn't have the heavy-duty vibe that the "baseball bat" switch on the db 728 has. I wish this amp had the same kind of switch, mounted on the front.
These a plastic mute/operate switch on the front panel. Here again, I wish it were a baseball bat switch.
One last note to all bass amp manufacturers everywhere: put the bass knob on the left! We read left-to-right, so we should see "bass" first (it's what we're most interested in)! The 750 places the bass knob on the right, but the 680 preamp has the bass knob on the left. I'm splitting hairs on this point.
One final point about speakers: I am using two Bag End S15-D cabs with this head. You should know that before Aguilar started making their own line of speaker cabinets, they used Bag End cabs at the NAMM show. With good reason, they are amazingly loud, with tons of bottom end, and they "sound like bass." With the gain at 12:00 and the master volume at 10:00 you're sure to piss off the soundman.
Believe me, with this rig, you can go up against two Marshall stacks and a loud drummer, and not even break a sweat. There's a little LED above the master volume knob that says, "CLIP." You'll know when it lights up, because you'll be deaf! You'll win any volume war!
I couldn't be happier with my purchase, and with a 10-year warranty, it's the best amp I've ever bought.
