I've been gigging 4-6 times a month, in a couple electric bass bands (a loud bar band a neo soul original band) and in a couple upright bass settings, folk/country and jazz trio. I wanted a cab with a sound big enough for medium sized bars and drummers who never heard of dynamics, but was sick of hauling a heavy combo and/or a big 4 x10 cab. Wanted more of the classic ampeg sound than the modern hi-fi sound--my tone goal is pretty much a p-bass with flats through an ampeg B-15

The cab is very light and very easy to handle. It's as compact as a 2 x 12 can realistically be, and it's amazingly light--amazingly. I look at it, grab it, prepare myself for the old straineroo--and bingo, the cab is in the air with no effort at all, out of the car and I's strolling along, easy-like. It's a dream that way. The luggage handle is cool and opens and retracts easily, and you can easily take it off. Thanks to the neodymium magnets in the speakers, the two 12s weigh something like a1/4 of what they normally would. The cab is made of "italian birch plywood", whatever that means. It's not as heavily armored as the usual cab--this isn't the cab I'd pick for really intensive road work. The corners arent' as well protected as on other ampeg cabs, for example. It has two 1/4 jacks and two speakon jacks

The sound: It's very good--very warm, rich, deep--smoother than the 2x10 version of the same cab. I love that. I usually turn the tweeter all off--I hate those things! And I run it with a QSC PLX 1202 (1200 watts bridged) and a sans amp RBI. It's been through four gigs now and no problems with that power load. It's got a lot of the old fat low midrangey ampeg vibe, but because it's a sealed cab it's very fast--responds quickly, because I think the sealed cabs have a high damping factor. It tends to fill a room rather than having a strong direction to it. I feel it in my teeth when it's all the way up. But at the same time, it's not the loudest cab in the world--if I run the QSC in stereo, and feed side 2 into a SWR 2x 10 I own, and side one into the portabass cab, the 2 x10 seems louder--louder, but more harsh. I'm not sure why they made these sealed instead of ported cabs, but I bet it has to do with the damping factor of the portabass heads. So I think the tradeoff in terms of lightness is probably efficiency. But is more than enough cab for what i am asking it to do, which is full medium sized bars with very loud bands and no PA support. And it gets me close to the sound of a B-15, or close enough that i'm happy

I'll maybe write a longer review when I've gigged with it more

Construction 85%
(seems too light for really heavy duty slogging)
Clarity 90%
(hard to answer--I think ported cabs are more directional but harsher)
Volume 75%
(Not the loudest 2 x112 in the world, but more than adequate)
Portability 100%
(a dream to haul around)
Value 75%
(expensive--lighteness costs)
Overall 90%
(Very haopy with it so far, it's not everybody's everything but it's cool)
