When I first picked up the catalog for Carvin I was impressed. I
could get a quality fretless for a killer price. I ordered my
fretless and it just so happened that they had exactly what I wanted
in stock so I didn't have to wait an incredibly long time. When it
arrived, the action was really high. I took it down to the local
music shop and had it tuned up. The strings on the bass when it
arrived were not great, but I through a set of LMD Energetics on it
and the bass sound was just great. The neck is wonderful. It's one
of the fastest and smoothest necks around. I was just starting out on
fretless so I decided to put fret lines in it. The only gripe I have
with the neck is that it's really sensitive to humidity. It can
change day to day. I have become a regular down at the music shop
because I am always taking in my Carvin for neck adjustments. The
electronics are ok. They are a little too bland for my taste but I
haven't had any problems with them so far. I do plan on changing them
when I get some money. A Wilkinson bridge comes standard on all of
Carvin's basses but I am not a fan of Wilkinson so I put on a ABM
bridge.
I was impressed with Carvin just because they offer quality
instruments at direct prices, something that is really good in today's
world of 5,000 dollar basses. I was not totally thrilled with the
Carvin until I made my minor adujustments. Now I don't think that I
will need another fretless for a long time to come.
