The bass came well set up with decent strings. I was amazed right away at the slim and comfy profile on the neck, since I'm used to narrow 4-strings (Rickenbacker). The bass sits comfort- ably on the knee, but is a TINY bit unwieldy when standing up. The construction is incredibly solid, the neck is super-straight, and the whole bass is beautiful and functional. Its sound is very distinctive - punchy and clear, with a fair amount of that fretless, Mike Manring-type Pedulla Buzz sound. Pegging the treble control on 10 makes the already bright ebony almost seem to have frets, and harmonics are tight and audible. A very fat fusion tone can also be pulled out without too much research. The bass's tone is generally better suited to fingerstyle playing than slapping/popping, but not too much of that goes on on fretless anyway. Finally, the bass reacts much better to some amps than others. I use a Hartke 3500 with a single Hartke 15", and a big speaker really seems neccessary for this bass's earthy tone. The bass is definitely worth the money, whether new or used.
