This was my first foray into the fretless world. I initial went to GC looking to buy a mexi jazz bass and I saw this hanging on the wall and gave it a shot...the jazz bass went back on the wall and this came home with me. I was alittle nervous about buy an unlined fretless..but 3 hours later I was playing a gig with it. There are dots on the side where the frets would be so you can keep your bearings. The body is made of a synthetic called Luthite which really doesnt have a "synthetic" sound. It is really light weight which matters on 4 hour gigs. The neck is maple and the fretboard is also synthetic Ebonol, which sounds alot like real ebony. The bass came strung with roundwounds (why any company would ship a fretless with roundwounds is beyond me). I had them put flats on it before it came home. The electronics are active with 3 band eq. They do affect the sound quite dramatically and are useful for eq changes on the fly. The MightyMite soapbar pickup is kinda midra!
! ngy and I will replace it with Lane Poor's one of these days. The construction is solid except for the tuners which slip a little. Bottom Line: It looks hot (Greg Curbow has a gift) and sounds great (really modern sound..no vintage tones here) and most of all the price cant be beat. I will get a fretted 4 string soon and recommend either the fretted or fretless to anyone.
