Now, it plays pretty OK for it's price. The short scale takes some getting used to, but it is comfy to play. The controls ofr pickup volume and tone give you decent control over overall tone.
Drawbacks include mediocre tuning machines (they really do jerk up/down steps as you adjust them - so it's hard to make delicate adjustments in tuning). The first thing I'll try to replace are the tuning machines. The shielding on the thing could be better. If I plug into my portastudio, I have to be careful which way I orient the bass with respect to the portastudio due to excessive hum.
One magazine said forget slapping or playing above the 5th fret. Forget the magazine, this is garbage. Slapping can be done quite nicely, and I only encountered weirdness after getting past the 12th fret.
The build quality seems quite reasonable. But, it will need more care than a P-Bass (don't drop it!).
