After having to drop the drums for health reasons after 30 years, I decided
to stay in the game by picking up a bass. I went for a 5 string because
most of what I wanted to do used it a lot. So, in my search I stuck to the
5. I got this bass and a Basic 40 amp (review elsewhere) for my set even-up.
The bass is a joy to play, the neck is rather wide, but the very thin
depth more than makes up for it. Since it is a 35" scale, the B string
feels really good, with the solid feel staying the same on all 5 strings.
The bridge has a good mass, and the tuners feel very silky and positive
when you turn them, and don't slip at all. The PU are 2 J-style with an
active pre-amp that has Bass-Mid-Treble, a blend control and 1 volume. It has a 9 volt system with its own compartment, so you don't have to remove
the control cover. One thing about the EQ, from the front of the bass to
the rear, the EQ is laid out Treble - Bass - Mid...strange. All controls
work flawless and smoothly, with no sudden changes thru-out there travel.
The sound of this bass is what sold me on it. With the EQ and blend you
can get a great deal of tone out of the instrument by itself with the amp
set flat. It is no low-end rumble machine, like a Music Man, and it really
doesn't nail a Jazz sound, but over all it has a ton of usefull tones in
it. It playes like a dream, is super light on your shoulder, and fits very
well around you. Fender bought DeArmond, then phased the instruments out,
so these have been out of production for a few years. Trying to finding info is
a real pain, but I say, if you see a Pilot V somewhere, pick it up and try
it...I think you'll like it!
