construction is rock-solid, these basses stay in tune forever (I dunno if it's the graphite reinforcement in the neck, as I hear lots of dissenting opinions wether or not this actually does anything). As the neck is very thin on this bass, I would expect to be making truss rod adjustments at some point. So far it has been through all kinds of climate changes, on planes, in my hot NYC apartment and to plenty of gigs. The only thing I have had to do in 3 or 4 months was adjust one bridge saddle the slightest bit. I have a fretted Elrick 5 as well, and both basses came perfectly set-up from Rob Elrick.

Very cool looking, large, thin body w/ an extended horn, somewhat reminiscent of a Carl Thompson body shape. At 7 lbs., this bass has comfort for the long gigs and really is hard to put down. It balances really well. I guess my only complaint would be that the lower horn cuts into your leg a bit when sitting. I got mine from the New York Guitar and Bass Boutique, which gets some really nice pieces. The top on this bass is an amazing piece of bookmatched Buckeye Burl with a Myrtle-like yellowness to it, it goes nicely with the pink ivorywood board (imagine a maple fretless neck with a bit more bite and swell - not brittle on the high end like ebony sometimes can be). It has soft Nickel roundwounds on it which came with it - I intend to replace these with the same strings when they wear. This helps very much with the killer tone of this instrument.

You can get punchier-than-jaco like w/ the controls set flat or crank it up to a roaring monstrous tone that sustains indefinately - this is also one of the only fretless basses that I have ever played that you can slap effectively. Due to its lightness, the bass can tend to sound more midrangy than a heavier bass (a Wal or MusicMan fretless for instance). The Elrick basses are real HANDMADE quality instruments that are readily available, taking the gueswork out of ordering a custom job. Highly recommended.
