Soundwise, it could be improved, but I didn't make any changes. I've played a lot of blues, rock and Dead type of music on it. The bass has the typical problems of most Fenders from the 70s, mainly a dead E string, but I tried to work my way around it. Overall, I'd definately give it a pretty high rating in the sound department.
The construction is solid, but the bass is heavy. Get a wide, padded strap for it. After three hours in a practice studio, my shoulder was feeling it. All in all, I give the bass a good/very good overall rating. As others have stated here, play one before you buy it to make sure it sounds good. This bass has treated me well and I've really enjoyed playing it and will continue to.
