This has been a good bass for me - I traded up from a modified late 70's P Bass. I play mainly in church, so I don't really need a unique sound. I mostly need a dependable bass. I went with a 5 string because many of the songs are in "choir" keys (many with 3 flats, which is a challenge on the 4 string).

Anyway, it's got several good points:

1. J bass tones - solid bottom and bright or warm highs 2. Great finish 3. 3 band active EQ plus pickup blend knob gives the player a wide range of tones without going to the amp - to me, this is most noticeable with the mid-range control 4. Graphite reinforced neck is very stable - virtually no warp and holds intonation very well

It also has some drawbacks:

1. Neck width is a bit much for my taste 2. Like most Fenders, it has a dead spot on the G string - mine happens to be at the 7th fret (many are at the 5th fret) 3. 34" scale means the B string is a bit floppy and indistinct - a killer "B" would make up for a lot of the other shortcomings 4. This bass is a bit neck heavy

Overall, this Jazz Bass is a very solid, safe choice as an all-around bass. It's not going to be the most distinctive sounding bass you could find, but it definitely won't make you sound crappy (of course, you can certainly make IT sound crappy)
