I’ve had my new Peavey Cirrus 5 string bass for a little over a week now and it is by far the best bass I’ve ever owned. I’ve been playing for over 25 years and I’ve owned so many different makes and models of basses that I can’t remember them all. Of course it’s a highly subjective thing…your instrument of choice is a very personal decision based on a lot of factors. I find the Peavey Cirrus to be an extremely well designed work of art. It has perfect balance…doesn’t move a bit when you let go of it.

It has such beautiful tone (I usually judge a bass’s tone by playing it without an amp…I rest my chin on the body…I can hear and feel the true sound of the strings and wood to determine whether it has any thin sounds on certain strings or at different parts of the neck, etc.). There is not one note anywhere on the bass that is either weak or too strong. Very smooth and full.

The active electronics allow you to completely shape the sound. You need two batteries for the preamp, but this allows you to control exactly how much of each pickup you want to use via a control knob (instead of the usual switch…i.e.- either/or both). There is a three band EQ on board that allows you to boost or cut Highs, Mids or Lows. The electronics really allow you to get just about any type of sound you can imagine. It sounds as good through my Peavey Microbass practice amp as it does through my Carvin RC-210. I can tailor the sound to any type of music (I play quite a variety of music).

I’ve got the action setup very low and the way the neck feels I can play effortlessly. It feels more an extension of me than other basses I’ve owned. To top it all off it is one beautiful bass to just look at. I’m also an artist and I refinish furniture, so the look of the exotic woods is very attractive to me. It has the hand rubbed finish I love and the neck feels silky smooth. I’ve always hated how a gloss polyurethaned neck feels after my hands get a little sweaty.

As far as the price goes, I lucked out. Some kid put a down payment on it and lost it after he couldn’t come up with financing. So I got it for a little over $900 (List is $1700). But after playing it for awhile now, I can honestly say I would have paid the full $1700 and it would have been worth every penny. Which really surprises me, since I still find it hard to believe it is a Peavey. I think they got it right this time!!!

It is still a matter of “To each, his own” but I would definitely recommend this bass to anyone looking for a high-end, quality bass.
