I love this bass. I tried a Dean Edge Q6 a while back, and it really didn't do it for me. Too scooped-sounding, and kind of big and klunky. The Peavey is surprisingly heavy considering that it has a fairly compact poplar body. The body is nicely countoured with a nice forearm cut and a decent belly cut. I find it very comfortable whether seated or standing.

I had decided not to play six-stringers after the Dean experience, and I was looking for a good 5, and thought I'd like to try an Axcelerator. This one came up at the above mentioned price in near mint condition, so I grabbed it. I'm glad I did. The sound is really excellent, with good punchy mids, more treble available than I really want, and a nicely voiced bass control. On this bass I don't miss a mid knob at all, the mids are great. Good slap tone, but tight string spacing.

Construction-wise, it feels like a bank vault, although it's certainly not the heaviest bass I've owned. I had a nice ash/maple American Standard P for a while that was at least this heavy. I think the Dean was heavier, too. The neck has a very flat profile that's a joy to play.

The B string is clear and solid, once you find strings that suit both you and the bass. I've found that I can get by with a lot of different brands or types of strings on a four-stringer, but fives and sixes seem to be pretty finicky. I think I've found the string for this bass in LaBella Hard-Rockin' Steels. I've had B's from some other brands die in a few days, and this B is still like new after several weeks.

So. Forget the "Peavey stigma", this is a killer bass. Like I said, the string spacing is tight, so some folks won't like it, but it fits me pretty well. The bass and treble controls are well-voiced and do their jobs very nicely, though it sounds pretty good flat, and that's where I usually run it. The frets are reasonably level, the bass hangs well on a strap, the tuners are smooth and accurate, the finish is nice, what more could a guy need?
