I had heard and read about how "Boxy" sounding this amp is, but I have to disagree with that somewhat. It DOES sound bad when cranked up on 5 or more on pre and post, but for practice and small gigs, it sounds pretty good. It really strains with my 5 string's B, but it's still useable. This thing weigh's a TON for it's size, but so does most Peaveys so thats a given. In my experience Peavey stuff just lasts, but is not some tone monster. I would recommend this amp to anyone wanting a solid, well built amp, for practice and small gigs.
This little thing gets loud! I use the Pre-out to another combo and just use both for large gigs, since money is a factor at the moment, I just can't afford a Peavey BAM. By inserting a 1/4" plug into the Pre-Out out on the Basic 40, with the crossver at 1/2 way, and plugging the other end into a TKO, I have a "poor mans" Bi-Amp set up. I use the Basic 40 for mid-highs and the TKO for low-low mid. It just takes a little playing with the EQ's. Over all, I would get another one if the price was right. I've heard that the new ones have more power and better tone.
