I purchased this bass new and have used it for 20+ years. I also own a 73 Fender P bass, 77 Rickenbacker 4001, 67 Gibson EBO, 85 Carvin fretless, and a 98 G&L 2000. Each of these basses have advantages over the others (except the EBO, what a P.O.S.) but my overall favorite is still the Peavey. The neck is similar to the P bass but a little thinner, sound is close but not quite as versatile as the G&L (great for passive), and the low E is piano- like in clarity. The output is a little low compared to the other basses but I run a 1500 watt power head with an ampeg preamp so no problem. I wish they had made a five string version of this beast. The sound comes from a massive body (heavy as a tank), truly massive bridge, and string thru body construction. This was the first bass Peavey ever made (I have number 32) and probably their best until the G and cirrus models (havent tried them yet). If you can find one, buy it. I love all my basses (except EBO) but I always keep going back to the T-40. Definitely the best sounding E string of the bunch. The only sound problem is highs tend to be a little harsh or brassy compared to the P bass or G&L. Another plus is if you ding it, it has no collector value at all so you wont be cryin about it! All in all, a great low groover.
