I purchased this Roscoe to replace another Roscoe LG-3005 that I had recently sold. I made my mind up to demo every bass that was out there to find that perfect sound. I tried basses made by Lakland, Pedulla, Zon, Tobias, Alembic, SSD, Modulus, Warrior, a nd Warwick. Nothing felt and/or sounded just right. Then I decided to drive across town and try a new Roscoe. Home sweet home! The new Roscoe?s that I played had a mahogany body/maple top and one had a Spanish Cedar body/maple top. I felt that they were slightly warmer sounding (particularly when using a pick) than the Roscoe I sold which had a swamp ash body/plank burl top. The music store didn?t have a Roscoe in stock that had an exhibition quilt top so I custom ordered a new Roscoe through a local mus ic store. The timing couldn?t have been better! Keith Roscoe was in the process of building a LG-3005 for the LA 2000 NAMM show and was at a point where he could incorporate the changes I wanted into that bass and ship it to me after the show. I got the bass two weeks after the show and couldn't be happier. The exhibition quilt top is absolutely beautiful!
It is finished natural but the quilted maple piece used has a natural yellow tint that gives the wood an amber hue. The polyester finish gleams and is absolutely flawless. The fingerboard is spalted purpleheart which starts off solid in color at the body and transitions to redish purple streaks and swirls just past the 12th fret. The bass has a hand carved ivory nut that a dds a real touch of class to the bass.
The frets were leveled to perfection and had evenly dressed ends with no fret kerf cuts visible. The action was set at 1/16" on the "G" string to 3/32" on the "B" string with no string buzz. I tend to play with a har der touch when the adrenaline gets pumping so I adjusted it up to 3/32" on the "G" to 1/8" on the "B". The bass also came with very minimal relieve in the neck but a CCW turn of the truss rod adjusted it to perfection.
The bass has Hipshot tuners and a custom Hipshot bridge that is fully adjustable and has no sharp edges. It's definitely an improvement over the Wilkinson bridge which was formerly installed on Roscoe basses.
The bass has 18 VDC Bartolini electronics with 3-band boost/cut EQ w/variable midrange sweep. The midrange control is also equipped with a push/pull potentiometer that changes the center frequency. The combination of the bridge pickup and this midrange control give you killer Jaco tones! I was amazed at how many different sounds you could get out of the bass without ever adjusting your amp!
I've played the bass through various amps (Alembic/Stewart, SWR, Eden, Peavey?) and I've come to the conclusion that it makes a good amp sound great and a great amp sound awesome! If you've never played a Roscoe bass, or haven't played one in a while, I highly recommend that you check one out! 'Nuff said!
