When I bought it I knew the p/u's were crap, but I had am 8 year old Seymour Duncan QP in an old POS P-J bass I made. I bought the neck QP pickup and replaced both the pickups on the Mexi-Jazz with a matched set of SDQP's.
They sound GREAT!!! They hum of course, being high output single coil pickups, but it's worth it!! The tone is that great Jazz growl, easily better than the new American Standard stock. The output is higher but still low compared to my other basses. The tone is really nice. (it's always difficult to describe tone! ;-)
They dropped in the bass super easily, anyone who's ever used a soldierig iron can do the switcheroo themselves, and they fit perfectly into the Fender J bass with no mods.
My next step is to install a Bartolini TBIBT I've got sitting in the bottom of a toolbox.
