I love this pickup. I LOVE THIS PICKUP. Let me start at the beginning. I found a nice mid-80's MIJ P-bass on the internet. Basswood body, Lake Placid Blue, Rosewood fingerboard. Bought it. It wasn't too bad, but the stock pups were not that exciting, kinda low-output, and a little noisy. Someone recommended a "vintage" style pickup as a replacement so I went shopping. Ended up with a SD Antiquity with raised "A". Killer pickup, right? I didn't like it. Beautifully made, signed by Seymour himself and so on. It just didn't give me the sound I wanted. I wanted deep bass, not overly much mids, and clean highs. So I took in back and got the Quarter-Pound. This is the one for me.
So how does it sound? Thunderous lows, with plenty of highs available if you want them. The mids are a little rolled-off, but that's OK since I'm using Fender flatwounds which have mids to spare. Not boomy, not muddy, and not as loud as I expected. Output is good, better than the stocker or the Antiquity, but it's not a "super distortion" model or anything like that. I like the looks of the big quarter inch magnets, too.
The wire is wrapped really fat, just about to the edge of the bobbin. It is also a little noisier than I like when you touch it, but it's not bad. All in all, a really good choice for the sound I was looking for. This would also be good if you wanted to do some slap on your P because of the good highs.
Did I say I love this pickup?
