This is one of the Japanese basses made by Tobias. These basses were made in Japan but final finish and setup was done by the original Tobias crewThis bass has volume, blend and a stacked bass/treble control. It is an active 9v bartolini preamp. I've owned this bass for over 10 years and played it on countless gigs and I have been very happy with the sound. I string it with DR lo beams and it is fantastic!

The sound is like any other Tobias made in the late 80's early 90's. The sound is so good that sound comment on how great the bass sounds. Other musicians at gigs have come to me to tell me how great it sounds!! I have compared the sound to other Tobias basses from around that time and it is pretty close. The low end is clear and defined. The highs are clear. Sometimes when soloing I have to adjust the treble to get it all notes to stand out. I looked at getting one of the new MTD 635's (which I will probably justify somehow), but sonically there's not a real "need" to make the purchase. The sound is a whole lot better than the Toby basses being sold on musicyo. This is a neck thru instrument with great sustain awesome playability and very comfortable over a long period of time.

Overall the bass is put together well. It has two truss rods in the neck and everything has held up pretty well. The neck is a little narrow for some. If you are playing a 4 string it will take a little getting used to, but it is very playable and musical. The instrument is durable. I will have to get another bridge soon (I've had the bass for over 10 years), other than that everything has been good. One of the annoying things however, are the knobs which are plastic and feel really cheap

If you find one you should buy it. These are great basses and have no flaws I can think of. At the time I got rid of my P-bass and wasn't sure. It was the best decision I've made. I have other basses, but I wouldn't even think of selling it.
