The Univox Bass Guitar was purchased new in April, 1967 by me. The Univox name was not a decal but rather a metal plastic attachment. Chrome keys and chrome gear, the bass's appearance was beautiful enough to win out over a wine colored Fender Mustang. Flat wound strings gave a full deep bass sound that continues to this day with fender strings. The neck is similar to a Fender P Bass and is fast with inlaid dots. I have played this bass and have purchased only two other basses that meet or exceed the high standards of the Univox - the Gibson Ripper Bass that I purchased in August, 1978 and the Fender Precision Bass Deluxe Lite that I received in February, 2000. I have read about other Univoxes and have not read much about them before the 1970s. This bass is treasured by me. It has a one horn body that is contoured but ends in a point. The guitar case is shaped the same way to custom hold the bass. I did read where Univox was known for copying America's guitars and for making guitars with wild shapes. The only minus in regard to this bass is that it is heavy. The Gibson Ripper Bass is heavy too. A good wide strap helps take care of this small problem. I would like to hear from anyone who knows about the history of Univox.
