It was actually the first bass I looked at and bought on total impulse. For the price ($300), I had nothing to lose, especially since it came with a whopping 20 watt Univox amp (that sounds horrible), gig bag and patchcord. Turns out to be the best thing to happen to me in a while.
Personally, I prefer the feel of playing to a Fender Precision (don't know details of it). You can't beat the smoooooth neck... and maybe 2-4 mm of action at middle. Perfect for tapping on. It came with a thumbrest... which is convenient, but gets in the way depending on what exactly you're doing.
The pickups don't emit any noise. The fat man chasing children has been imprisoned. Now, back at the ranch...
The only real downfall to it is that it's a bit on the heavy side. And that the nut around the plug in place loosens from time to time (hasn't fallen off). Oh, and it tends to lose it's tuning after about an hour or so of playing (possibly poor strings--still using ones it came with). Other than that, it's great.
As for buying a Vantage... check out where it's from. This one was made in Korea where the company is... and is not a cheap American built product (what can I say, we North Americans suck at building things). In fact, if it's made in USA, burn it in the store. Right then and there. If you're questioned, tell the clerk you're doing them a long term favor. Don't go back for a while.
Remember... you want either the Indonisia or Korea Vantage. No USA.
